Anna turns 4!

It's so hard to believe our Anna-girl is 4 years old! Sometimes, she really seems older than that...wise beyond her years I guess you'd call it. And at other times she seems just a typical fun-loving little girl who loves to be silly and wear twirly skirts and collect dandelions. She loves, LOVES to play pretend and would play from the minute she wakes up to the minute she goes to sleep if she could. Everything becomes a toy...at mealtimes, her fork and spoon become little people that dance around her plate and then fall off the table "cliff" and need to be saved and she completely forgets she's supposed to be eating. She can play really well by herself, but she always prefers to have someone else to play with. She and Paul are pretty good playmates these days...as long as he follows her lead and doesn't start to get ideas of his own. ;) S

Anna is the queen of dawdling. It takes FOREVER for her to get her shoes on or wash her hands. She will be often be standing at at the bathroom sink for over 15 minutes singing songs or making silly faces at herself in the mirror. She is just in her own little world lots of the time, completely oblivious to what is going on around her. :)

Anna loves to learn and try new things. She still loves to sing and dance. She can do a headstand if she uses a wall to lean against. She loves to ride her bike around the block and play at the park. She is getting to be quite the artist and makes cards and drawings for anyone and everyone. She loves books and "reads" them before falling asleep almost every night. She knows all her letter sounds and is starting to sound out simple words. She can do simple addition problems on her fingers. She inquisitive. She asks hard questions and sparks conversations on topics like why do people die and why fighting back is sometimes the right choice...and she really seems to understand the not-so-simple answers.

Anna is very social and loves playing with friends and will talk to anyone about anything. She always has something to say! She is very socially aware and gets her feelings hurt easily. She has the pouty-lip mastered and it comes out in full force when she's in a sassy mood, but usually she is very obedient and eager to please. She always tries hard to do what is right, but I have noticed that she sometimes follows the lead of friends or her little brother to do things she would never think of doing on her own. We've had to have some talks about being a good example and leader to help others make good choices. Anna is a great helper. She loves to help with chores and always helps Paul when he can't do something by himself. She loves to make silly faces and say silly things to make other people laugh. She is kind and loving.  She loves making gifts and cards for people she loves. She gives frequent hugs and says, "I love you" unsolicited. She is smart, sweet, sensitive, silly and sassy. She is our Anna-girl and life would not be the same without her!

Anna's birthday was on a Sunday this year, and we had a pretty quiet celebration at home with just our family on her actual birthday. We had our traditional birthday pancakes for breakfast (chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream and sprinkles on top) and she was super excited about the balloons on her chair. We let her open two presents before church. At church, one of her primary teachers asked if she was having birthday cake for her birthday. She replied, "No, I had birthday PANCAKES!" and then put her hands over her mouth and giggled like it was the craziest thing ever haha. After church, she chose homemade pizza for dinner and then we had cupcakes and sang Happy Birthday and opened the rest of her presents. She got several phone calls from her grandparents and aunts and uncles wishing her a happy birthday. She liked the phone calls but got tired repeating over and over what presents she had gotten for her birthday haha.

The following Saturday, we had her birthday party. She chose a cowgirl party theme (probably inspired by the stick horse and cowgirl hat she got for Christmas). We had fun planning the food and games and everything turned out really cute. It was her very first "friend party" and in addition to her aunts and uncles, we invited five of her friends from the neighborhood and church to come. Anna really wanted to play pin the tail on the horse, so we painted a little horse and some tails on poster board and cut them out for the game. That was the game we played first. Then we tried to do a little relay race using the stick horses, but there wasn't really enough room and so we ended that one pretty quickly. And finally, we played a pinterest-inspired game where the kids "rounded up" balloon "animals" into the corral (the trampoline). They loved that one and we played it three times. Then the kids wanted to get on the trampoline with all the balloons, but five four-year-olds plus Paul plus 40 balloons was a bit much for our little trampoline so I quickly called the kids for lunch.

Lunch was all cowgirl/farm themed (also pinterest inspired). I was really grateful to my sisters and Tyler for coming early to help with the food prep! We had mini pigs-in-a-blanket, deviled eggs, "haybales" (rice krispie treats) and "tractor tires" (Oreos) and "lassos" (licorice). Oh, and a veggie tray to be healthy. :) The cowgirl cupcakes were my favorite though. I was pretty pleased with how cute they turned out.

After cake and presents, it was time to go. We sent the kids home with little bandanna-wrapped party favors that Anna helped me put together.

It was fun to see Anna so excited the whole week leading up to her party and then at the party she was just glowing with little-cowgirl joy. She was one happy birthday girl!

Christmas 2016

Christmastime is always favorite time of the year, but this Christmas seemed especially magical as I watched my kids really catch hold of the Spirit of Christmas. This was the first year Anna remembered Christmas from the previous year, and it was so fun to see how excited she was for all the Christmas traditions. We also were able to participate in the Church's #lighttheworld initiative, which helped keep our focus on service and the Savior. Here are only about half of the thousand pictures I took during December. ;)

We put up the tree the first day of December. The kids loved hanging the ornaments and they only rearranged them about five times a day. :)

Cleaning the church building was one of the ways we chose to serve for #lighttheworld.

Our church Christmas party was lots of fun and had a cute photo booth.

Anna wanted to take pictures by the Christmas tree.

We hosted Anna's little preschool Christmas party.

Another service we did for #lighttheworld was choose an ornament from the angel tree at church and donate a gift.

We welcomed our very first niece, Sadie Lu Smith into the world! She was born on December 12th, and is the sweetest little baby. I love that both my kids always call her "Sadie Lu".

Baking Christmas cookies is a favorite tradition.

Derek and I celebrated our 7th anniversary! Haley watched the kiddos for TWO whole nights for us while we stayed at a bed and breakfast in beautiful little Midway, UT.  While we were there, we went to see Rogue One, went ice skating, and attended a local Christmas concert. It was a wonderful and much-needed little getaway.

It was like 10 degrees when we went ice skating so we were FREEZING but it was still so much fun.
We gave the kids an early Christmas present...a kitten! We named him Milo, and he's been a lot of fun. Well, the kids and I think he's fun, Derek thinks otherwise. He would much rather have gotten a dog, but I keep telling him, Milo is almost like a dog. He loves being around people, scratches himself with his back foot like a dog, and loves to play fetch! His favorite toys are socks and the outlet safety plugs. He will chase those all around the house and if you throw one for him, he will fetch it and bring it back. It's the funniest thing!

My parents and Maren came out the day before Christmas Eve, so we had my whole family together for Christmas. We had a nice Christmas dinner on the 23rd at my grandparents' house where we also had our traditional nativity pageant as well as visit from Santa!

Paul refused to wear a costume, but I got him to hold a sheep instead.

We had Billy and Josette's family over for  the afternoon on Christmas Eve, but I unfortunately didn't get any pictures with them. Later that evening, we assembled tamales for our traditional Lontine Christmas dinner.

Making tamales is a team effort!

The horde of presents under the tree.

Cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. The card says, "Dear Santa, I Love you Santa. We're using your crayons. The cookies are for you. The carrots are for your reindeer. Love, Anna and Paul." :)

Christmas morning!

Paul's gift from Santa was a firetruck.

Anna asked Santa for a toy blender and was thrilled to find one Christmas morning.

All dressed up for church.

The kids got these cute hooded towels from Grandma Karry..
My big surprise gift from Derek was a DSL camera. I'm still figuring out how to really use it, but even on the automatic setting, it takes pretty awesome pictures. Here are some Derek and I took Christmas Day.

Anna made smoothies with her new blender for every single person. :)

Nap time :)

We had planned to travel to Denver the day after Christmas to spend time with Derek's family, but with all the snow we got on Christmas Day, we decided to wait a day for the roads to clear. Then we discovered head lice on Anna's and my hair, causing us to cancel our Denver trip all together. We spent most of the next two days shampooing our hair, combing for nits, vacuuming, and washing bedding, clothing, and car seats. It was not fun. But once we got the lice problem under control, we were able to do some fun things as a family.

We took the kids for their first time sledding (on a real sledding hill and not our yard). They had a blast.

We spent a day at the aquarium. Anna loved the sharks and penguins, and Paul's favorite were the otters. He kept running along the glass chasing the otters as they swam back and forth.

This octopus was really active and it was fun to watch it climb up the glass.

Chasing the otters

She is always so animated, I love it.

Crossing the rope bridge

Not really sure why they have ocelots at an aquarium, but they were cool!
We had dinner with Kyle and Amanda and Jordan when they got back from Denver and exchanged gifts with them.  They also brought back presents for the kids from Mike and Joy and so it felt almost like a second Christmas.

Anna was really excited about her Frozen suitcase from Mike and Joy
Matching pjs!

Despite the lice fiasco and being really bummed about not making it to Denver, we had a pretty good Christmas break overall. It was so nice to have Derek home for a whole week and to just spend time together as a family!
